Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20 Review

Updated:

Specifications

Many runners view the GTS 20 from the Brooks Adrenaline series as one of the best stability models on the market. Runners love that its pronation control doesn’t impede natural movement. The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20 is a dependable trainer for daily use when completing recovery runs at moderate paces. While it’s not the best shoe for a marathon, it delivers consistent comfort for long distances.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20 Fit and Materials

These are shoes you won’t want to take off. They’re super comfortable with a variety of color options! The Men’s and Women’s GTS 20 comes in both bright, vibrant colors and muted tones.

The Sole of the Adrenaline GTS 20

The sole of the Adrenaline GTS 20 features Brooks’ trademark plush DNA LOFT material in the heel. This foam material narrows as it moves forward to gradually transition into Brooks’ trademark BioMoGo DNA foam that supports the rest of the shoe. Alongside the upper portion of the Adrenaline GTS 20, the sole features seem like one streamlined midsole piece that cradles the heel to keep it rolling forward instead of to the side. The separate parts of foam are well-combined to form a greater whole. The bottom of the shoe, or outsole, has the same general design as previous models. Diagonal hash marks enhance the rubber pattern instead of horizontal and horizontal marks replace vertical marks laterally. The shoe offers an excellent grip. Deeper grooves provide decent flexibility for the forefoot to bend with the foot. At the same time, the shoe’s solid rubber patches are durable over a long period. The posterior midfoot is stiff. Because of Brooks’ DNA material’s longevity, the GTS 20’s outsole will more than compensate for the shoes’ moderately high cost by lasting well over 500 miles.

The GuideRails® Holistic Support System

Brooks’ GuideRails® Holistic Support System is designed with the idea of bowling bumpers in mind to keep your knees in alignment. The foam of the rails gently direct improper foot motion back into forward momentum. Brooks has utilized this GuideRails Holistic Support System in many of its running shoes, including the GTS 20. The concept behind the GuideRails is that the GuideRails exist to steer runners towards their healthy and natural gait. The purpose of the GuideRails is not to fix your gait. Instead, they reduce any movement that could slow you down and degrade your connective tissues from their impact. These GuideRails work! We noticed when we were running that the shoes weren’t too intense, enabling us to have a more natural experience while lightly guiding us into form. The shoe also has a fierce heel counter with some sculpting in the footbed to help you re-establish the natural position of your feet when you run. The result is a seriously comfortable shoe along with some beneficial side effects.

Are Brooks Adrenaline GTS Good for Supination?

Because of their pronation control, these shoes are not the best for supination because they are designed to help prevent arches from collapsing. Supination is another issue, which means your weight is distributed to the outside of your foot while running instead of your arches.

The Upper and Heel of the Adrenaline GTS 20

The GTS 20’s new engineered-mesh upper design is lighter yet keeps its structure with support strips from the heel, to laces and down to the early midfoot. Its 3D Fit Print offers detailed design features without any additional bulk. The shoe’s thick tongue stays in place but does not connect to an internal “bootie” like other models, and Brooks does not restrict heel support to cut weight. The arch height is medium. The internal heel counter is high-quality and intended to guide heel motion forward. Padding around the collar is very thick in the back, tapering towards the laces. Reflective patches are on top of the posterior heel and run along the lateral toe to warn drivers when running in low light conditions.

Key Features of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20

The Brooks Adrenaline offers moderate stability and cushion. Runner’s World has referred to it as the “Self-Driving Car of the Running Shoe World” for a good reason. Here are some of the key features of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20
  • Cushioning: its smooth ride will last for many miles as hundreds of runners have attested
  • Stability: many wearers of the GTS 20 enjoy that the shoe prevents overpronation without being too intense or hard
  • Toe-off: as a stable running shoe, it has abundant bounce in the forefoot, according to many wearers
  • Step-in comfort: a significant number of customers gush about how nice and plush the shoe feels from the inside
  • Heel lock: slippage has not been reported due to the hard internal counter; the shoe’s padded collar keeps the rearfoot securely in place
  • Durability: the Adrenaline 20 maintains its form and function for hundreds of miles, according to many avid runners
  • Toebox: there is plenty of room in the forefoot, which is appreciated by wide-footed customers; Wide and Extra Wide options are available
  • Traction: customers have had no issues with the shoe’s grip, even on wet surfaces

How the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20 Differs From Other Models

A quick overview of this model compared to older models shows that this shoe only gets better with change. The updated design of the Adrenaline GTS 20 is here to stay, with only minor tweaks this year, like a gradual transition between the two foam support structures and an asymmetric upper design. Many running experts describe it as a more stable version of the Brooks Ghost. If you are concerned with the bulk, you should look out for the slightly lighter 21st edition. With these shoes, Brooks aims to limit knee and hip pain by guiding foot motion and offering holistic support for the runner. If long runs over 10 miles are your favorite way to train, but you want a shoe that can also handle your High-Intensity Interval Training, you should choose the Adrenaline GTS 20.
