The Sandpiper, Avian, and Big Ferry Trails at Skidaway Island State Park are technically three systems that connect to create one big loop. The trail system is about 4.2 miles long if you stick to the main loop, but there are branch-off trails you can explore for an extended trip, too.

The Sandpiper – Avian – Big Ferry Loop is one of the most popular nature trails in the Savannah area, so it’s not ideal if you’re looking for a private run. However, the track features all sorts of scenic views, including a river, marshland, and lots of gorgeous trees. The trail is well-maintained, and it’s also dog friendly, though they must be leashed at all times.

This trail, which borders the historic Ogeechee river canal, is an ancient running trail with lots of history. The Savannah – Ogeechee Canal is mentioned on the National Register of Historic Places. While the canal itself is more than 16 miles long, the trail is not well-maintained for the entire distance. However, efforts are being made to transform the whole channel into a park and running trail.

If you decide to visit the canal trail, you’ll also have the opportunity to see both a museum and a nature center documenting the area’s history. As a side effect of following a canal, parts of the trail can flood during rainy weather.

Savannah is home to many beautiful parks and nature areas. Two of the best for running are Forsyth Park and Daffin Park, and the two are in close enough proximity to each other to create a loop through both. All you have to do is take a short run through Savannah’s historic district, which is full of well-maintained mansions and homes that are hundreds of years old.

Runners affectionately call this route the “Forsyth-Daffin Duo.” In total, the Forsyth-Daffin Duo is about six miles, but you can also break the run down into just Forsyth Park or Daffin Park, as both areas have individual running loops and trails.

You can’t visit Savannah, Georgia, without seeing the famously tree-lined Wormsloe Historic Site, home to Oak Avenue. Oak Avenue, as its name suggests, is bordered by ancient oak trees that cover the trail. Gnarled oak branches draped with Spanish moss cover the trail year-round, and all of the trees are well over one hundred years old.
