Permits For Quality Trails / Mapleton - Update

Two proposals for new Mapleton events were discussed in a pre-permit meeting with Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service this week. The good news is - we look likely to have a new run at Cooloolabin Reservoir, just north of Mapleton. QPWS has advised they will approve a course there - but we also need Council approval so we will have to wait and see. The lakeside trails and the picnic area here are managed by Council, while QPWS manages firetrail and forestry road sections.

Cooloolabin is a very pretty lake, with a small picnic area and toilets. Courses will be 4 and 9km of easy running. We have only just met and the advertised date was 11/12 October, so a new date has been set for Sunday 16 November. This also means bumping the Mount Glorious weekend of training runs and walks back a week to November 8-9. Details will be updated on the web this weekend.

But wait, there’s more - talk of a new QPWS policy to finally allow occasional events on walking trails. We hope this will give us access to new areas of quality bush and trails in the near future. The Mapleton permit discussions with QPWS also covered a lot of key permit issues, since the Trails Forum has put on the table all the reasons for a number of previous permit refusals and outlined the QPWS framework for permit assessment.

The bad news is QPWS again confirmed they will not allow new events to share walking trails under their current policies, turning down an application for a run on the northern loop of the Sunshine Coast Great Walk. The primary reasons cited were 1. the Landscape Classification system, which is used to allow only certain types of activities in a given class of landscape setting, and 2. the Great Walk’s Track Management Plan, which we have yet to see since its not a public document but apparently excludes anything they consider a “competitive event”.
